DePix Reaches Lightning as the First Native Taproot Assets Stablecoin

by Eulen

At SatsConf 2024, Eulen and Joltz announced that DePix is now issued as a Taproot Asset and operating on the Bitcoin Lightning Network. The issuance uses the Joltz SDK, built for Taproot Assets, and runs alongside the existing DePix issuance on the Liquid Network.

An Industry First

Ryan Gentry of Lightning Labs, the team behind the Taproot Assets protocol, described DePix as the first natively issued stablecoin using the protocol to integrate with mainnet Lightning.

The distinction is worth stating precisely. Stablecoins had reached Lightning before by being bridged in from other chains. DePix is issued natively as a Taproot Asset, on Bitcoin, and moves over Lightning from there. The claim is narrow and technical, and it belongs to the protocol’s authors rather than to us.

What It Enables

The flow demonstrated at the conference is short: receive DePix over Lightning, swap it for Lightning sats, send those sats to any Lightning wallet. No sidechain step, no custodial exchange in the middle.

For a Real-denominated asset, that combination matters. Lightning settles in seconds at negligible cost, and a stablecoin that lives there natively puts one more degree of separation between someone holding Reais and someone acquiring sats peer to peer.

Alongside Liquid, Not Instead of It

DePix continues to be issued on the Liquid Network, where it has operated since its launch. The Taproot Assets issuance adds a second network rather than replacing the first. Partners and holders on Liquid are unaffected.

Both networks settle the same asset: one Real, held in reserve, for each DePix in circulation.
